NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP HIGHWAY
DEPARTMENT
The Newberry Township Highway Department maintains and repairs 82 miles
of roads, 3 parks (42 acres), the Township buildings, and municipal
equipment. The Highway Department has eight full-time employees and a
foreman. Questions regarding Township Roads can be
directed to Randy Eichelberger at 938-6992 or email to reichelberger@newberrytwp.com.
Please see the News & Updates tab for information on when the township will be working on certain
roads.
HELPFUL SNOW REMOVAL INFORMATION
If possible, wait until the snowplows have cleared your street before
shoveling your driveway. If you do shovel before your street has been
plowed, shovel the snow to the side of the driveway where the plow
passes last. This way your driveway won’t get plowed shut after you have
shoveled.
Please remember that Township Ordinance prohibits blowing or throwing of
snow onto the street.
It is also important to move your vehicle off of the street. This
provides a safer and faster snow removal process for our operators.
When winter maintenance is necessary, the application of anti-skid
materials throughout the Township many take four to five hours,
depending upon weather conditions. However, snowplowing nearly 330 lane
miles of public streets, can easily double the amount of time.
PLAYING BASKETBALL IN THE STREETS
We understand your concern for a recreation area near your home, but we
must consider the needs of the motoring public, as well as the safety of
you and your family. It is our position that basketball goals placed in
or near the street are a violation of Section 2326 of the Second Class
Township Code, which prohibits obstructions and nuisances along any
public road in a township.
In most situations, the backboard and rim extend past the curb line,
creating an obstruction to motorists, and Township maintenance for
snowplowing and street sweeping.
If you have basketball poles and appurtenances, we ask that you move
them out of the right-of-way along the street and back onto your
property or driveway where they will not obstruct any vehicles or
equipment, or be a potential cause of an accident or injury. Thank you
for your cooperation.
