NEWBERRY TOWNSHIP REFUSE AND RECYCLING

REFUSE

REFUSE BILLS ARE SENT OUT BY THE 1ST OF JANUARY, APRIL, JULY, AND OCTOBER AND ARE DUE THE 30TH OF THAT MONTH. IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A BILL BY THE 10TH OF THAT MONTH PLEASE CALL KAREN AT 717-938-6992. FAILURE TO RECEIVE A BILL WILL NOT RELIEVE YOU FROM CHARGES OR PENALTIES.
 

The Township of Newberry currently contracts with Penn Waste as the solid waste and recyclable hauler. The Township handles the quarterly billing, general questions and complaints. Ordinance #260, passed in December 1994 requires refuse removal for all residents. Currently there are two options available:
 

A. $50.55 per quarter
You can put out for collection:
Maximum of SIX (6) containers per week (30 gallon size bags).
Recycling Bin
*Glass (bottle or jar any color)
*Plastic (#1 and #2 only)
*Aluminum, steel and bi-metal cans
*Newspaper (bundled or inside a paper bag)
*Cardboard must be flattened and bundled not to exceed a 3 ft x 3 ft bundle. No trash is allowed in cardboard boxes.
1 Large Household item per week
Additional Bags: Additional bags will be collected only if in an orange Penn Waste bag Bags may be purchased at the Township Building for $3.50 each.
 

B. $13.55 per quarter
You must at least have this option.
In this option, you will be billed $13.55 per quarter for recycling only. Recycling is a state law and mandatory for all residents. This option is for residents who do not generate much trash. With this option, you may purchase “bags” from the Township building at $3.50 each to place your trash in (30 gallon size). You may put out 1 large household item per week as long as a bag is placed/tied on that item.
 

COLLECTION TIME: Please place bags/cans and recycling bin out the night before your collection day when possible. The hauler starts collection by no later than 6:00 am.
 

HOLIDAYS: The following holidays are observed by the hauler: New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. **Should your pick up day fall on, or after, a holiday, then your pick up will be a day later in that week. If the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, your garbage will be picked up on your
normal day.**
 

BRUSH: Brush is to be cut in four (4) foot lengths and securely bundled and tied. This bundle may be substituted for one (1) can or bag.
 

TIRES: Tires removed from their rims, with a maximum outside diameter of 32” and maximum tread width of 12” may be substituted for one (1) can or bag.
 

PAINT: The following may be placed in your regular trash: oil based paint, latex paint, turpentine, paint thinners, shellac, lacquer, varnish, strippers, and removers.
 

CARDBOARD: Must be flattened and bundled not to exceed a 3 ft x 3 ft bundle.

LARGE ITEM COLLECTION GUIDELINES:  Acceptable Items: appliances, carpet 48" max length rolled & tied, furniture, mattresses & box springs, car tires only (must be off of the rims) tree branches & brush 49" max length (must be bundled * tied), scrap metal 48" max length, plumbing fixtures- toilets & sinks only


**WHAT IS NOT COLLECTED**

 The following will NOT be collected by our hauler: auto parts, concrete, construction debris including drywall, shingles, roofing debris, betteries, household hazardous waste, commercial industrical waste. Stains, chemicals & liquids.


YARD WASTE COLLECTION GUIDELINES: Yard waste materials are as follows; garden residue, tree trimmings, shrubbery, leaf waste and any other organic landscape vegetation. Materials should be packaged as follows: Place items in either biodegradable kraft bags or tied easily in bundles **NO PLASTIC BAGS**, bundles should be no longer than 4 feet in length, bundles should not weigh more than 30 lbs each, branches should not exceed 5 inches in diameter. The following SHOULD NOT be placed out for yard waste collection; grass clippings, dirt or stones, fruits and/or vegetables, any material in a plastic bag. Yard waste collection dates will be printed on your refuse bill. Collection begins promptly at 6:00 am.

Newberry Township Recycling Information


Please find listed below recycling guidelines to assist you in identifying acceptable materials:

Paper, Paperboard & Cardboard:

  Recycle these items: Cardboard boxes, pizza boxes, food boxes (ie:cereal & Jell-O boxes), paper towel & toilet paper rolls, paperboard packaging (ie: tissue boxes), office paper, shredded paper, newspaper & inserts, magazines & catalogs, junk mail & envelopes, paper bags and phone books.

  Prepare

1. Remove all packaging (Styrofoam, peanuts, plastic, bubble wrap, plastic liners, etc)

2. Flatten all boxes

3. Cover loose paper with heavier containers to prevent it from blowing away.

**Unacceptable :Plastic bags, food soiled materials.**

 

Containers:

  Recycle these items:  Plastics #1-#7 containers & bottles with necks smaller than their bases. Glass: Clear, brown & green glass food and beverage containers.  Metal cans: aluminum beverage cans. Steel food and beverage cans. Aerosol cans

  Prepare

1. Remove caps/lids

2. Rinse thoroughly

3. It is okay to leave on labels and neck rings.

**Unacceptable: Plastic tubs, cups, trays & bags. Broken glass, windows, mirrors, ceramics & light bulbs, drinking glasses, aluminum foil, scrap metal.**

****Sharps - needles should be put in sealed containers (ie: sealed plastic bottle) and put in trash container/bag.****
